Where the smell comes from
That characteristic leather scent isn't artificial — it comes from the natural oils, fats, and tanning agents used to treat the hide. Vegetable-tanned leather in particular develops a richer, more noticeable smell than chrome-tanned leather, because the tanning process uses plant-based compounds like tree bark rather than synthetic chemical baths.
In other words: the stronger the natural smell, the more likely the leather was tanned the traditional way rather than the fast industrial way.
