Vegetable-tanned leather has a phrase that sounds artisanal but deserves a proper explanation. What is it, why does it cost more, and what does it actually mean for the bag you're carrying?
What Vegetable Tanning Is
Tanning is the process that transforms raw animal hide into leather — stabilising the proteins in the skin so it doesn't decompose. Vegetable tanning uses tannins extracted from plants — oak bark, chestnut wood, sumac leaves, quebracho bark — to achieve this transformation. The hide is immersed in increasingly concentrated tannin baths over a period of weeks or months. It is slow, labour-intensive, and produces leather of extraordinary quality.
What Chrome Tanning Is
Chrome tanning uses chromium sulphate salts to achieve the same transformation in 24–48 hours. It is fast, cheap, and produces soft, uniform leather quickly. Approximately 80% of global leather production uses chrome tanning. The wastewater from chrome tanning contains heavy metal compounds that require careful treatment.
Why Vegetable-Tanned Leather Is Superior for Bags
The slow plant-based process produces leather with a denser, more complex fibre structure than chrome tanning. This translates to: better durability, genuine breathability, a distinctive earthy smell rather than a chemical one, and the ability to develop a rich patina. Vegetable-tanned leather starts firm and develops character with age. Chrome-tanned leather starts soft and stays soft but doesn't develop patina in the same way.
What It Looks Like
Vegetable-tanned leather often has a slightly waxy or matte surface finish. It may show the natural grain variations and surface markings of the hide — signs of authenticity rather than defect. The colour is often deeper and more complex than chrome-tanned equivalents.
