What Fits in a Crossbody Bag? A Realistic Guide
People are consistently surprised by how little fits in a crossbody bag — and sometimes pleasantly surprised by how much. The answer depends almost entirely on which size crossbody you're looking at.
Mini Crossbody (under 18cm wide)
Realistic capacity: phone (standard size), one card holder, keys, one lip product. That's it. Mini crossbody bags are designed for minimal carry — evenings out, concerts, anywhere you want true hands-free with only the absolute essentials. Not suitable as a daily bag unless you habitually carry nothing.
Small Crossbody (18–22cm wide)
Realistic capacity: phone, slim wallet, keys, earphones (case included), one small makeup item, small hand cream. This size works for people who genuinely travel light on their lightest days. Not suitable for commuters who carry more than the above.
Medium Crossbody (22–28cm wide)
Realistic capacity: phone, full wallet, keys, earphones, hand cream, lipstick, notebook (A6 or small A5), paperback book or sunglasses case (not both). This is the most functional daily crossbody size for most people. It covers the genuine daily carry without becoming heavy or cumbersome.
Large Crossbody (28cm+ wide)
Realistic capacity: everything above plus a small tablet or e-reader, light folded scarf, small umbrella, daily medication, backup charger. At this size, the bag begins to function more like a small shoulder bag and may not sit close enough to the body to be truly hands-free and comfortable.
The Test
Before buying, gather the items you actually carry every day. Photograph them side by side. Then check the interior dimensions of the bag you're considering. If in doubt, the medium is almost always the right choice for daily use.
