The Complete Guide to Rug Sizes: What Every Room Needs
Every room in a home has different rug requirements — different foot traffic, different furniture arrangements, different proportions. This is the complete guide to every room.
Living Room
Standard sizes: 160x230cm (small rooms), 200x300cm (medium rooms), 240x340cm (large rooms). Rule: front legs of all main seating on the rug. For open-plan spaces, the rug defines the seating zone — make it large enough to clearly separate it from the dining area.
Bedroom
For double: minimum 200x300cm, extending 60cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed. For king: 240x340cm or larger. Alternative: two runners (60x180cm each) placed on either side of the bed. The rug you step onto first thing in the morning matters — choose something that feels good underfoot.
Dining Room
The rug must extend at least 60cm beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. Measure your table, add 120cm to the length and 120cm to the width. Flatweave kilims are ideal for dining rooms — easy to clean and no pile to crush under chair legs.
Hallway and Entrance
Runners in 60x180cm, 80x250cm, or 80x300cm are the standard. The runner should leave 15–25cm of floor visible on each side. Kilims are particularly well-suited to hallways — their flat weave handles constant foot traffic without crushing.
Children's Room
160x230cm or larger. Durability is paramount. Natural wool kilims are excellent — soft enough for sitting on the floor, durable enough for years of play, and easy to clean.
