The Best Rugs for Hardwood Floors: What Works and What Damages Them
A rug on hardwood floors should enhance the room, protect the wood, and create warmth. The wrong rug can scratch the surface, trap moisture, or slide dangerously. Here is how to choose correctly.
What Damages Hardwood Floors Under Rugs
Rubber-backed rugs trap moisture, prevent the wood from expanding and contracting naturally, and can permanently stain or discolour the finish over time. Avoid any rug with a rubber or latex backing on hardwood. Always use a proper rug pad as the interface between rug and floor.
The Best Rug Types for Hardwood Floors
Flatweave kilims: The ideal choice. No rubber backing, low profile, light weight. A natural wool kilim on a proper rug pad is completely safe on hardwood. The flat weave ensures the rug lies perfectly flat with no edges to curl.
Natural fibre rugs (wool, cotton): Also excellent. Natural fibres breathe, don't trap moisture, and are gentle on finishes.
What to avoid: Rubber-backed rugs, synthetic fibre rugs with heat-bonded backings, anything described as non-slip if the non-slip mechanism is a rubber coating.
Rug Pads: Essential, Not Optional
On hardwood, a rug pad is not a luxury — it's a requirement. The pad provides grip, cushioning, and allows air circulation between rug and wood preventing moisture buildup. Choose a rug pad made from natural felt, natural rubber, or a felt-rubber combination. Avoid plastic or PVC pads.
Care Considerations on Hardwood
Periodically lift and air your rug to prevent moisture buildup. Vacuum regularly so that grit and particles don't get trapped under the rug and act as sandpaper on the wood surface. Rotate the rug every six months.
