The Problem With "Vegan Leather"
The vast majority of what’s sold as vegan leather is PU (polyurethane) — a petroleum-based plastic product. It is not biodegradable. It cannot be recycled in standard waste streams. It begins to delaminate and peel within 2–4 years of regular use, at which point it cannot be repaired and must be discarded. This doesn’t mean vegan leather is always the wrong choice. But it does mean that “vegan” and “sustainable” are not synonyms when it comes to bags.
What Is Full-Grain Leather?
Full-grain is the highest grade of leather — the entire surface of the hide is preserved, including the natural grain, markings, and variations. It has not been sanded, buffed, or corrected to create a uniform surface. Full-grain leather is the grade that ages well, repairs cleanly, and develops the patina that makes quality leather bags worth owning.
Vegetable Tanning vs. Chrome Tanning
Vegetable tanning uses natural tannins extracted from tree bark, plant roots, and other organic materials. The process takes weeks rather than hours. It is more labour-intensive and more expensive. The resulting leather is stiffer initially, softens with use, develops a rich patina over time, and is biodegradable at end of life. The traditional tanneries of Fez and Marrakech have used vegetable tanning methods for over a thousand years.
The Real Cost Calculation
A fast-fashion synthetic bag at €80 lasts 2 years. Cost per year: €40. Over 20 years: €800 spent, 10 bags in landfill.
