Rug Under Sofa: Yes or No? Interior Designers Weigh In
Should the rug go under the sofa? This is one of the most debated questions in interior design, and the answer is not as simple as yes or no.
The Case for Rug Under the Sofa
Placing the rug so that all legs of the sofa sit on it creates a very cohesive, unified look. The rug feels like it belongs to the sofa. The room looks larger because there is no visual gap between the sofa and the rug. This approach works best in smaller rooms where visual unity is more important.
The Case for Front Legs Only
The most common designer-approved approach: front legs of the sofa on the rug, back legs off. This still connects sofa and rug visually while requiring a smaller rug. This is the most practical choice for most rooms.
The Case for No Legs on the Rug
All furniture legs off the rug, with the rug floating in the centre of the seating area. This works only in large rooms with generous space around all furniture. The rug reads as an independent element. Requires confidence and a very strong rug.
The Verdict
For most living rooms: front legs on, back legs off. This is the sweet spot of visual coherence, practical rug size, and design intention. If your room is generous and your rug is exceptional, consider all legs on. Never float a rug in a small room — it will make the space feel awkward and the rug look accidentally placed.
