Moroccan Rugs for Dining Rooms: What Size and Style to Choose
The dining room rug is the most practical rug decision in the house — and also the one most people get wrong. Too small, too delicate, or too textured, and the rug creates daily frustration.
The Non-Negotiable Size Rule
The rug must extend at least 60cm beyond all sides of the dining table. This allows chairs to be pulled out completely and still remain on the rug. A chair with its back legs off the rug will catch the edge every time someone sits or stands — this is a daily frustration and eventually causes edge damage to the rug. Measure your table. Add 120cm to both the length and the width. That is the minimum rug size for your dining room.
Why Kilim Is the Ideal Dining Room Rug
Flatweave kilims handle dining room conditions better than any pile rug. There is no pile to crush under chair legs. Spills are easier to clean on a flatweave surface. The rug lies completely flat, so chair legs don't catch on pile edges. And kilims are reversible — when one side shows wear, flip it over for a fresh surface.
Style Considerations
The dining room rug should complement the table and chairs without competing with them. If your furniture is dark wood, a kilim in warm terracotta, ochre, or cream tones creates warmth and contrast. If furniture is lighter, a bolder multicolour kilim can be the room's statement piece.
Maintenance Under a Dining Table
Crumbs, spills, and chair friction are constant in a dining room. Vacuum weekly. Deal with spills immediately. Consider a rug pad to prevent movement. Rotate the rug every year to distribute the wear from chair legs evenly.
