Marrakech Travel Guide: The Best Souks for Home Decor

Share

Marrakech is one of the great shopping cities of the world — but knowing what to buy, where to find it, and how to navigate the souks takes preparation. This guide focuses specifically on home decor: where to go, what to look for, and how to bring it home.

The Medina Souks

The ancient walled city — the medina — is where the artisan souks are concentrated. The souks are organised loosely by craft: the leather souk near the tanneries, the carpet souk near the central square, the brass and metalwork souk, the textile souk. Navigation is genuinely labyrinthine — the medina's alleyways were designed to confuse invaders, not to guide tourists — but getting lost is also how you find the most interesting pieces.

The Tanneries

The Chouara tannery, visible from the terraces of surrounding leather shops, is one of the most remarkable sights in Marrakech — open stone pits filled with coloured dye baths, worked by hand as they have been for over a thousand years. The surrounding shops sell the leather goods produced from this leather: poufs, bags, babouches (slippers), belts. Look for vegetable-tanned leather rather than the cheaper chrome-tanned alternatives.

The Carpet Souk

Kilim rugs, Beni Ourain pile rugs, and Azilal rugs fill the carpet souk. Quality varies from authentic handwoven pieces to machine-made imitations presented as authentic. The key tests: check the back, feel the weight, look for natural irregularities. Negotiate — prices are never fixed, and the first price stated is invariably significantly above the expected selling price.

What to Ship Home

Kilim rugs and leather poufs are the highest value-to-weight items worth shipping home from Marrakech. Both can be sent via standard courier services from the Marrakech post office or through reputable shipping agents in the medina.
