How to Tell if a Leather Bag Is Real or Fake

The global leather goods market is full of materials masquerading as leather. Knowing how to tell the difference between real and fake leather can save you significant money and genuine disappointment.

The Smell Test

Real leather has a distinctive earthy, slightly animal smell that varies slightly depending on the tanning method. Vegetable-tanned leather smells warm and organic. Chrome-tanned leather has a lighter, slightly more processed smell. Synthetic leather (PU, bonded leather) has a plastic, chemical smell — sometimes masked with artificial fragrances. If it smells like a new car interior rather than an old saddle, it is almost certainly synthetic.

The Surface Test

Run your fingernail lightly across the surface. Real leather shows a slight impression that recovers slowly. Synthetic leather either shows no impression (too rigid) or shows a clean scratch that remains permanently (too soft and not self-recovering). Real leather also shows natural variation in texture — pores, grain direction, slight surface irregularities. Synthetic materials have a uniform, almost perfect surface texture.

The Bend Test

Flex a piece of the material (fold a corner, if accessible). Real leather creases naturally and recovers. Synthetic leather often creases sharply and may crack at the fold. Bonded leather may show surface cracking at repeated flex points.

The Edge Test

Look at the cut edges of the leather (inside the bag, on strap ends, around zip pulls). Real leather shows fibrous, natural-looking edges. Synthetic leather shows a clean, uniform, often slightly plastic edge — sometimes with a visible fabric backing layer visible from the edge.

The Price Test

A large bag in genuine full-grain leather costs €150–400+. If you're seeing genuine leather bags at €40–80 in large sizes, they are not full-grain. They may be bonded leather, corrected-grain, or synthetic leather with a leather lining.
