How to Stop a Rug from Slipping on Carpet

A rug that keeps sliding on carpet is one of the most frustrating domestic annoyances — and one of the most easily solved. Here are the solutions that actually work, ranked by effectiveness.

Why Rugs Slip on Carpet

Unlike hard floors where friction holds a rug in place, carpet creates an unstable surface. The rug fibres have no grip on the carpet pile beneath them. Every footstep or furniture shift nudges the rug slightly, and those small movements accumulate until the rug is halfway across the room.

Solution 1: Rug-on-Carpet Pad (Most Effective)

A rug pad specifically designed for carpet-on-carpet use is the most reliable solution. These pads have a waffle or mesh structure that grips both the carpet below and the rug above. Choose a pad slightly smaller than your rug (5cm in from each edge) so it stays completely hidden.

Solution 2: Double-Sided Carpet Tape

Apply double-sided tape around the perimeter of the rug's underside, pressing firmly onto the carpet. Works well for lighter rugs and areas with moderate foot traffic. Can leave residue on carpet if left too long.

Solution 3: Velcro Strips

Apply one side of self-adhesive Velcro to the rug underside and the other to the carpet. Very effective for smaller rugs.

For Kilim Rugs Specifically

Flatweave kilims are particularly prone to movement on carpet because they're lightweight and smooth. A rug-on-carpet pad is essential. Kilims are light enough that a thin pad works perfectly.

Our kilim rugs: Handwoven Moroccan kilims — natural wool, flat-weave, ships from Italy. Pair with a rug pad for any floor type.
