How to Clean the Inside of a Leather Bag
The interior of a leather bag receives more daily abuse than the exterior — receipts, crumbs, cosmetics, pens that leak, water bottles that sweat — and yet it is almost never cleaned. Here is how to clean a leather bag interior properly without damaging the lining or the bag's structure.
Identifying Your Lining Type
Most leather bags have fabric linings — cotton, canvas, or synthetic. Some higher-end bags have leather or suede interior linings. The cleaning approach varies. Fabric linings can tolerate more moisture than leather linings. Suede linings require specialist care.
Emptying and Inspection
Remove everything from the bag, including any removable pouches or organisers. Turn the bag upside down over a bin and gently shake to remove crumbs and loose debris. Use a small soft brush or a lint roller to remove dust and particles from fabric linings — particularly in corners and at the bottom, where debris accumulates.
Cleaning a Fabric Lining
For general cleaning: slightly dampen a clean cloth with warm water and a drop of mild dish soap. Wring thoroughly — the cloth should be barely damp. Wipe the interior surface gently, section by section. Follow with a clean damp cloth to rinse, then a dry cloth to absorb moisture. Leave the bag open to air dry completely before use.
Removing Specific Stains from Fabric Linings
Pen or ink: dab (don't rub) with a cloth dampened with a small amount of rubbing alcohol. Test on an inconspicuous area first. Lipstick or makeup: gently scrape off solid matter, then treat with mild dish soap. Oil or food: sprinkle baking soda, leave 30 minutes, brush out, then clean with soap and water.
Odour Removal
Place a small bowl of baking soda inside the closed bag overnight to absorb odours. Cedar blocks are also effective and add a pleasant scent. Ensure the bag is completely dry before closing — moisture is the primary cause of interior odour.
