How to Choose a Rug Size for Your Living Room (With a Simple Formula)
The most common rug mistake is not the wrong colour or pattern — it's the wrong size. A rug that's too small floats disconnected in the middle of a room, making furniture look like it's waiting for something. The right size anchors everything.
The Golden Rule
The rug must be large enough that all main furniture in a seating group has at least its front legs on it. When in doubt, go one size larger. Rug regret almost always runs in the direction of too small.
Living Room Sizes
Small living room (under 20 sqm): 160x230cm minimum — front sofa legs on the rug.
Medium (20–35 sqm): 200x300cm — the workhorse size, accommodates sofa plus two chairs.
Large or open-plan (35sqm+): 240x340cm or larger. The rug must clearly define the seating zone.
Bedroom Sizes
The rug should extend 60–75cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed. Double bed: 200x300cm ideal. King bed: 240x340cm minimum for a generous feel.
Dining Room Sizes
The rug must extend at least 60cm beyond the table on all sides so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. A 90x180cm table needs a minimum 210x300cm rug.
The Quick Formula
Measure your furniture grouping. Add 60–75cm to each dimension. Round up to the nearest standard size. That is your rug.
