7 Questions to Ask Before Buying Any Leather Bag

Before you buy a leather bag, online or in person, this is the complete checklist worth running through. It takes two minutes and saves you from a bag that looks great in photos but fails within a year.

1. Leather grade

Ask directly: is this full-grain, top-grain, or bonded leather? Full-grain is the only grade that develops genuine patina and resists wear long-term. If a listing only says "genuine leather" without specifying the grade, that's itself a signal — "genuine leather" is a legal term that includes lower grades, not a guarantee of quality.

2. Stitching type and density

Saddle stitching (two needles, interlocking thread) outlasts single-thread machine stitching, especially at stress points like handle attachments. Look for 3-5 stitches per centimeter, evenly spaced.

3. Edge finishing

Burnished edges — smooth, rounded, blended into the leather — are the mark of careful finishing. Painted edges should be thin and even; thick, cracked, or pooled paint is a warning sign.

4. Hardware material

Solid brass resists corrosion and metal fatigue. Cheap zinc alloy hardware is usually the first thing to fail on an otherwise decent bag.

5. Tanning method

Vegetable-tanned leather is more labor-intensive and produces a richer, more durable result than fast chrome tanning. Ask which method was used — a seller who knows the answer specifically is more trustworthy than one who says "genuine leather" and stops there.

6. Country and workshop transparency

A seller who can tell you exactly where and by whom a bag was made is generally sourcing in good faith. Vague "handmade by artisans" language with no specifics is worth treating with some skepticism.

7. Return policy and warranty

A seller confident in their construction quality will generally offer a real return window. Extremely restrictive or absent return policies on "handmade leather" items can be a quiet signal about expected durability.
